Urge your MP to sign the EDM against circus animals #bigstop

with 4 comments

An Early Day Motion is circulating amongst MPs calling for a ban on using wild animals in circuses. Please take a moment to write to or email your MP and urge them to support it.

If you don’t know who your MP is, you can find out at the excellent website They Work for You.

Please also follow the #BigStop hashtag on Twitter and follow me @jamesmb Darren Hector @wildlifephotog and @powerpenguins.

If you want to get involved in the campaign, please email powerpenguins@socialhaus.co.uk and we’ll add you to our campaign list.

To help, here’s a template letter for you to use and or adapt!

Dear [MPs name here]

I was disappointed to learn recently that it is likely that the government will shortly announce that they plan to allow the continuation of the use of wild animals in travelling circuses in the UK.

In government consultations, 94.5% of respondents called for an end to the use of animals in circuses, yet it appears that the government considers that self-regulation will be good enough. Self-regulation in an industry which has seen repeated instances of cruelty to animals will not be strong enough to ensure the welfare of animals involved.

The use of wild animals in circuses is incompatible with good welfare standards – the travel, cramped living conditions, forced training and exposure to noise all lead to stress for the animals. By using creatures such as elephants, zebras, lions, tigers and camels we are reinforcing the message that animals are commodities to be used rather than sentient beings deserving of respect and care.

I would be grateful if you would consider signing EDM 403 which calls on the government to use its powers under section 12 of the Animal Welfare Act to introduce a regulation banning the use of wild animals in circuses.

Yours sincerely

Great stuff – I’d add that it would be helpful to add your home address to any email to your MP so they definitely know you’re a constituent. Less easily ignored if they know you might not vote for them next time round!

[...] It’s clear that PAWSI shouldn’t be allowed to take control of the regulation of the use of wild animals in circuses.  But really – do we want regulation? Or do we want the government to listen to the 94.5% of us who want to see an end to animals in traveling circuses?  If you haven’t made up your mind yet then watch this video from the Captive Animals Protection Society and then ask your MP to sign EDM 403 calling for an end to wild animals in circuses -  James Barisic has a template letter.
